The constraints of the pandemic inspired me to stage a performance that was both an act of creation and a study of limitation. This work features two dancers enclosed within a delicate veil of translucent plastic—a boundary that defines their space and challenges their freedom. This imposed border, physical and symbolic, reflects the dual nature of limits: those enforced by circumstances and those we unconsciously construct within ourselves.

Symbols have always captivated me, serving as bridges between the tangible and the abstract, a means of interpreting both the self and the world. In this work, the veil functions as both a shield and a barrier—a surface upon which the dancers’ struggles and triumphs unfold. It becomes a symbol of resilience and determination. Their movements narrate a silent dialogue between constraint and liberation, between the instinct to seek safety and the irrepressible desire for expression. In their graceful struggle, I saw a universal tension: the yearning to transcend, understand, and harmonise with the limits that shape us.

With its stark interplay of light and shadow, black-and-white photography proved the perfect medium for this exploration. The absence of colour distils each frame to its emotional essence, allowing texture, contrast, and form to amplify the depth I felt during the shoot. Each image invites reflection on how imposed or self-created boundaries define our existence. They challenge and mould us; in confronting them, we uncover the contours of our most authentic selves. This interplay of limits and freedom is, ultimately, an ode to resilience—a testament to the power of art to reveal, confront, and transcend.

This project, created during the global pandemic, explores the tension between freedom and constraint. It features dancers Giovanni Leone and Vittoria Franchina from DANCEHAUSpiù—Centro Nazionale di Produzione della Danza. Matteo Bittante's invaluable contributions, including skillfully directing the choreography and bringing the dancers’ performances to life, made the series possible. This series examines external limitations and inner resilience, reflecting my vision as its creator and author.
