Conceived and directed by Maurizio Cigognetti during the global pandemic, Unbound Within Boundaries is a photographic exploration of constraint, resilience, and the fragile spaces in which the body negotiates its freedom.
For the series, dancers Giovanni Leone and Vittoria Franchina of DANCEHAUSpiù — Centro Nazionale di Produzione della Danza — were invited to move within a translucent veil of plastic: a delicate surface that both protects and confines. The material becomes a shifting boundary — physical and symbolic — reflecting the limits imposed by circumstance and those we construct within ourselves.
Developed with the choreographic collaboration of Matteo Bittante, the work unfolds as a silent dialogue between restriction and expression, tension and release. The dancers do not simply perform; they inhabit a visual condition, responding to a space shaped by light, material, and the gaze of the camera.
Rendered in black and white, the series relies on light and shadow to intensify gesture, texture, and emotional presence. Rather than illustrating confinement, it seeks to reveal the quiet strength that can emerge from within it.
